Genes and You: Teaching about Human Aspects of Genetics

Interactive game about Human Genetics

Everyone will enjoy this educational game that tests their knowledge of genetics from a human perspective. Press here to play.

Genes and You
Genes and you is targeted for Key Stage 4 students, typically aged 14-16 years. This series of learning resources aim to:

-   Raise awareness of genetic conditions and their impact on individuals, families and society.
-   To explore human, social and ethical issues raised by the new genetics
-   To help students make informed choices.

Genes and You bridges the gap between "science" on the one hand and "society" on the other. It incorporates the scientific information into social situations of relevance to school students. This series of learning resources is also an excellent way to help young people acquire the intellectual and emotional understanding necessary to deal with the challenges arising out of advances in modern genetics research.

Teachers' notes complement the student activity sheets in a series of real life scenarios which challenge common stereotypical social attitudes by providing background social information as well as a clearer understanding of the science. The exloration is handled imaginatively and sensitively through roleplay and other exercises. (Forward by Laurance Smaje, programme director at the Wellcome Trust).

This cross-curricular material was designed for teacher use even for those without specialist knowledge. It was written by Gill Mullinar and the Genetic Interest Group (GIG) with contribution from a large number of GIG member patient organisations and schools, and can be accessed here.
